5:30pm AHIMSA – GANDHI: THE POWER OF THE POWERLESS
India – 2021 – 92 mins.
Director: Ramesh Sharma
AHIMSA – GANDHI: THE POWER OF THE POWERLESS speaks to the conscience of humanity as people globally grapple with intractable problems surrounding race, and as societies struggle to give the marginalized and underserved human dignity and restore fundamental human rights.
The film brings to the fore the impact of the Gandhian message of non-violence worldwide: how it inspired Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, Barack Obama and the Civil Rights Movement in the United States; the Solidarity Movement in Poland, the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia as well as Nelson Mandela and the anti-apartheid struggle in South Africa. It also examines the relevance of Gandhi’s message in the contemporary world.
7:45 THE LONG BREAK-UP
USA/Ukraine – 2020 – 85 mins.
Director: Katya Soldak
Ukrainian-American journalist Katya Soldak, of Forbes Magazine, now living in New York City, tells the story of Ukraine, her country of origin, as it exits the USSR, works through two revolutions, and endures a war with Russia—all through the eyes of her family and friends in Kharkiv, a large Ukrainian city just 18 miles from the Russian border.
The director will answer questions after the film.
