Our partners include JASNA Orlando, the local chapter of the Jane Austen Society of North America, and the Enzian Theater. Members of JASNA Orlando will give talks and host workshops on topics about Austen and the Regency era. The Enzian Theater will screen various film adaptations of Austen’s novels throughout the year.
Why celebrate Jane Austen?
As a library, we see every day the literary and cultural impact of books and how literature connects people from all walks of life. Few authors, whether historical or modern, can claim the impact Austen has and the connections her stories have built. Her relatable characters, universal themes, and biting social critique have made her a literary giant and pop culture phenomenon.
Austen’s novels are celebrated for their social commentary, particularly that of social barriers based on class, status, and gender. She is known for her use of irony to satirize the social and economic constraints of women, focusing on the marriage market. A keen observer of people Austen gave psychological depth to her characters and provided remarkable insight into the complexities of human behavior, emotions, and relationships. She perfected the 18th-century literary technique of free indirect speech which blends characters’ speech and thoughts with the narrator’s voice. This innovative technique makes readers feel as though they are entering the characters’ minds. It is no wonder why her characters feel so real to even modern readers.
Adaptations
Her legacy doesn’t end with the novels themselves. Austen’s works have been adapted into multiple films and TV mini-series, perhaps the most famous being the 1995 BBC TV mini-series, Pride and Prejudice with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth as Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. Her novels have also been adapted into books, theatrical performances, art, and other media, with such adaptations ranging from the faithful to the modern and loosely based. Austen’s works have generated communities and fandoms that connect fans from all over the world and help keep Austen’s legacy alive for generations to come. Her work continues to be discussed in academia through literary criticism which Austen scholars have strived to make accessible through public humanities initiatives. Austen’s novels have also sparked an interest in the Regency period, resulting in innumerable books and websites devoted to educating the public about life in Austen’s time. Festivals in multiple countries, including the US and England, give Austen devotees a chance to partake in the fashion, manners, music, and dances of the period. There is also the successful heritage sector which finds Austen devotees visiting places such as Jane Austen’s House Museum, Chawton House, her grave at Winchester Cathedral, and the filming locations of her film and TV adaptations.
Whether you are new to Austen’s works or a proud Janeite, Winter Park Library invites you to partake in a wide range of programs dedicated to honoring the legacy of one of English literature’s greatest talents and cultural phenomenon.
